Why Broccoli, Dark Greens, and Olive Oil Became Staples in My Anti-Inflammatory Lifestyle

When I was struggling with rheumatoid arthritis years ago, I started paying very close attention to how food made me feel.

I wasn’t just looking for temporary relief - I wanted to understand how to support my body naturally from the inside out. Over time, I began learning that certain foods either helped calm inflammation or seemed to add more stress to my body.

That’s when I started building simple anti-inflammatory habits into my daily routine.

Some of the foods I consistently kept coming back to were broccoli, dark leafy greens and olive oil.

These may seem like ordinary ingredients, but for me, they became part of the foundation of how I nourished my body while working toward healing.

Now, after being symptom-free from rheumatoid arthritis for 17 years, these foods are still staples in my kitchen.

Learning to Feed the Body Differently

One thing I realized during my healing journey was that inflammation doesn’t only affect the joints.

It can affect energy, digestion, brain fog, stiffness, mood, overall wellbeing.

So instead of only focusing on symptoms, I started focusing on feeding my body nutrients that support healing, protection, and balance.

That shift changed everything for me.

I stopped looking at food as just something to fill me up and started seeing it as nourishment for my cells, joints, gut, and immune system.

Why I Started Eating More Broccoli and Dark Greens

Broccoli and dark leafy greens became some of my favourite healing foods because of how nutrient-dense they are.

I learned that broccoli contains a powerful compound called sulforaphane, which has been studied for its ability to help block inflammatory enzymes linked to cartilage damage.

For someone dealing with arthritis, that was incredibly important to me.

The more I researched healing foods, the more I realized how important it is to protect the joints and support the body before damage progresses further.

Dark greens and cruciferous vegetables are also rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, fibre, antioxidants, magnesium, plant compounds that support the body naturally.

I started adding them into my meals consistently - not perfectly, just consistently.

Sometimes it was steamed broccoli drizzled with olive oil.Sometimes sautéed greens with garlic.Sometimes a large salad packed with leafy greens.

Simple meals became part of my healing routine.

Supporting Gut Health Was a Big Turning Point for Me

Another thing I learned along the way was how connected gut health is to inflammation.

When I began focusing on gut-supportive foods, I noticed changes not just in digestion, but in my overall wellbeing.

Dark leafy greens contain fibre and nutrients that help nourish beneficial gut bacteria and support digestion naturally.

For me, healing became less about “fighting” my body and more about supporting it.

That mindset shift was powerful.

Why Olive Oil Became One of My Daily Essentials

Olive oil is something I use almost every day.

I love it not only because it adds flavour to meals, but because it contains a compound called oleocanthal, which has natural anti-inflammatory properties.

Olive oil is also rich in healthy fats and antioxidants that help support the body’s cells, brain health, joint health, heart health, bone and cartilage protection.

When you live with inflammatory conditions, protecting the body on a cellular level becomes so important.

Over the years, I’ve learned that healthy fats are not something to fear - they are something the body truly needs.

Why Pairing Greens with Olive Oil Matters

One of the things I find fascinating is how foods work together.

Pairing broccoli or dark greens with olive oil actually helps the body absorb nutrients more efficiently.

The healthy fats in olive oil help the body better absorb important fat-soluble nutrients and antioxidants found in vegetables.

So, something as simple as olive oil over steamed greens becomes a deeply nourishing combination.

And honestly, that’s what my healing journey has taught me:

Healing doesn’t always come from complicated routines.

Sometimes it’s found in the simple meals we repeat consistently.

The Power of Small Daily Habits

People sometimes assume healing has to involve extreme diets or complicated protocols.

But for me, some of the biggest changes came from simple daily habits repeated over time.

Adding more greens.Using olive oil generously.Choosing foods that support inflammation balance.Learning to nourish my body instead of depriving it.

These habits became part of my lifestyle - not something temporary.

And after 17 years symptom-free from rheumatoid arthritis, I truly believe the small things matter.

The foods we choose everyday matter. The way we support the body matters. The consistency matters.

Broccoli, dark greens, and olive oil may seem simple, but for me, they became part of the foundation of healing naturally and supporting my body long-term.
